So I’m working in this house, trying to straighten out the work some previous remodeler did when he put an addition on. The floors of the addition don’t match the floors of the existing house, so I have to shim, and fill, and generally futz with everything to make the subfloors right for the upcoming oak floors.
This afternoon, I started in a fairly small area, approx. 5′ x 8′, where one end of the new floor matches the addition, and 8′ away its out by over 3/4″. And the original house floor is the level one!
So I’m cutting a small access hole in the OSB to figure out where the joists are, and I hit the copper radiant tubing under the floor with my circ. saw blade. In two places, no less. Almost immediately, there’s a small geiser.
So, I turn off the zone with the geiser, and I drive to HD and get a couple of the SharkBite connectors. Boy, are those things great! I get that patched up, and decide I’ve screwed things up enough for one day. Tomorrow I’ll start again.
Oh, yeah, the HOs had told me about the radiant tubing a couple of days ago. It looks like I’m gonna have to work on memory retention techniques. Or x-ray vision. I’m not sure which would be easier to develop.

BTDT. You could always drop 5 large on a thermal camera. I'm not sure about burying sharkbites in the floor. Any alternatives?
The sharkbite literature at my local hardware says the sharkbites are one of the only fittings like this that are approved for placement in walls with no access panel.

Its open to the crawl space underneath. When the plumber finally gets there for the kitchen rough, I'll tell him abut it, and have him do it right.
It might be hard for him to justify such an expense.. so if it helps, I'd be glad to borrow it often to make it all seem worthwhile.

FYI, Ideal Industries has just come out with a IR camera that's $3,500, with good resolution and some real cool features.

Just saw one at the electrical trade show. I'm considering buying one and developing a thermography/predictive maintenance program for commercial/light industrial. For a lot of businesses, finding a weak breaker or termination, or a hot bearing, and fixing it before it fails, makes it cost-effective to do a thermographic survey periodically.

I'd like one for examining flat roofs for leaks.

I think we paid that much or more for an outfit to scan our switch gear. Funny thing is our overhead construction group has had one for years. Even the power plants have them, but we have to go to a contractor to get our gear checked.
I'm going to pass that link on my manager, just for shiggles and grins. Know what he's going to say ? (buget has been cut,....)
Gee, Pete. I'll have to think about that generous offer.
Ummmm, no. <G>
Today I'm getting ready to drill through a bathroom tile floor to put in the provided floor bumps for the doors, when the super pops in. Scratches his chin, and says maybe we'll disregard them... there's a radiant mat under there... somewhere<G>I still got to screw up. Was putting in one of those Baldwin privacy lock extensions for 1 3/4" doors, and dropped it down the hollow core... it's in there somewhere.http://www.tvwsolar.com
I went down to the lobby
To make a small call out.
A pretty dancing girl was there,
And she began to shout,
"Go on back to see the gypsy.
He can move you from the rear,
Drive you from your fear,
Bring you through the mirror.
He did it in Las Vegas,
And he can do it here."
Lost my little handsaw down a balloon framed 2nd floor stud space the other day.
Thought about an earthmagnet on a string but the cast iron stack is right there too so chalk one up for the reno gods.
Whoa! You know Sharkbites aren't approved for radiant floor heating, right? The heat buildup melts the O rings and you start springing leaks.
Still time to get back to the house before it's underwater?
:) Just kidding.
Look at it this way. Tomorrow has to be better!

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping <G>
I'm really annoyed with having to fix all this stuff. As far as I'm concerned, matching floor heights on an addition is Remodeling 101. Especially when the old house floor was pretty much level anyway. I don't know what this other guy was thinking.
But he's been gone for 4-5 years, and I'm getting paid T&M to fix things. So I shouldn't whine too much.
Maybe you could hold a 2 iron above the floor and use it as a divining rod?Anytime I pull out that club I always find water. Might be good if you think you have a stretch of woods under the floor, too :)Good luck over there today!'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

but those shark bites don't seem to care much for sustained heat application...

Well, I wouldn't pull that on anyone that I didn't know. Shep's got a well grounded sense of humor. And he'll get his revenge next time on the golf course.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

I think Shep too home one of those hybrids in the golf give-away. Wonder if that wouldn't help in this situation?

I've had mixed success with that club. I can't seem to figure out how far I'm gonna hit it.
Sometimes, I hit the heck out of the ball, and it goes much farther than I think it should. Other times, I can't seem to get any distance out of it.
But I'm not ready to give up on it yet.
Yeah, I had to read his post a couple of times to let it sink in that he was joking.
Good thing my heart's OK LOL
dang Shep, bet that made for an exciting drive to HD.
never did that but I'd sure...'hate when that happens!'
I wuz muttering under my breath almost the entire time.
And I really couldn't "vent" at the house, since they've got 5 kids from ages 4 to 16, who have spring break this week, and are home.

Just a hair-brained suggestion... would a stud finder help? Better luck tomorrow...
Scott.
maybe after you left the golf course you should have gone fishing instead...
with a little practice this will find those tubes....

The sad thing is the tubes are perfectly visible from the basement. If I had just taken a quick look down there (which I normally would do, but for some reason didn't here), I'd have saved myself a lot of grief.
All I had to do is unscrew the clips holding the pipe to the floor sheathing, and I would have been golden.
" ... and I would have been golden"
I use this expression all the time - my girlfriend (from south america) thinks it's hilarious - another one of my crazy idioms that doesn't translate all that well (along with "you bet your ####!"). I always wondered if it's regional (I'm from eastern MA) but I see you're profile has you in NJ. Are you from there originally? Does anyone else want to weigh in - do you use the expression ("golden"), where are you from. Maybe we can map it.
Bill.
Born and raised in central NJ, and I've been hearing and using that expression for as long as I can remember.
that had to hurt double....

Forget about the memory. Sometimes I get to the truck, and have to think hard what I went there for. I think its hopeless.
Just read that there seems to be a connection between aspartame and memory loss.
No more diet coke for me. Good luck with the floor.
Rich
I wish I had the excuse of drinking diet sodas for any memory problems I have, but I don't. LOL
Floor went well today. Used my EZ Smart guide to rip a bunch of tapered strips to level the floor, and got the new OSB glued and screwed down without causing any more damage.
The HOs were very understanding about my mistake.
