add vapor barrier to existing ceiling

Customer has a garage ceiling with 5/8 rock on it that has been taped and first coated. Wants to heat garage.
Any suggestions for the most cost effective way to go about insulating and getting a vapor barrier (I would assume it needs one) up.
It is a three car attached garage with trusses.
My first thought was to just tear the existing rock down, stuff batts of insulation between the trusses, put up poly and re-rock.
Don’t really want to try to install poly from the topside – too cut up with all the truss webs. Don’t know if there is a paint I could just put on from below and just blow the top side full of insulation.
House is near Minneapolis, MN – fair bit of humidity in summer and real cold in winter (when he will be running garage furnace)
Any creative suggestions?

i take it you are talking about floor trusses above the garage..
in your climate, i would blow the space solid with cellulose.. either thru the band joist from each end to the middle or cut a slot in the ceiling drywall and blow from the center out

Actually these are roof trusses on the garage - no living space above.
Hear tell that a good primer (Zinnser's?) topcoated with another coat or two of quality latex serves as a pretty good vapor barrier. Then have the attic space blown full of insulation. The guys that specialize in blown can recommend the best way.
Thanks for the response. I thought I had heard something like that as well - was hoping to have a few of the resident experts recommend such a thing - so I could do it with clear conscience.
Anyone else willing to stick out their neck and bless a painted on vapor barrier, and then just letting blown in insulation sit on back side of rock.
Thanks,
Shoe
What do you need a vapor barrier for in a garage?
If I read this correctly this is a garage with truss and a attic space, just add insulation and properly ventilate the attic. We do not vapor barrier attic spaced ceilings here in the northwest. If you want to add extra insurance to the job put two layers of pva primer, most brands this will give you a one perm barrier.
