One of my projects this summer is to add a bulkhead door to my basement.  Currently there is no opening to the outside where I am placing the door, so I am going to cut through the old block foundation and add a new small block foundation where the bulkhead will go.  I have seen people join a new foundation to the old with rebar, but these were with poured foundations, so my question is, is it OK to join my new block wall with the old using rebar, and should I put the rebar into the mortar joint between two courses?

Also, if anyone has ever done a project like this, I’d appreciate any tip or tricks.
