Adding shelving to Super Walls in basement
I had an addition put on and we went with the R-5 Super Walls. (so they have the concrete forms and they’re 24″ on center with the 3/4″ pressure treated furring strips where a typical stud would be).
I would like to take advantage of the wall cavity (as it were) and put some basic shelving in there.
I was thinking one of two formats:
1) I think I have about 6″ (maybe 8, I’ve not really measure to be honest) for depth if I keep the shelf flush with the furring strip “stud”. But, being concrete, my guess is that I’d have to use possibly some pressure treated supports on the left and right-hand side and tapcon them in and the set the shelf on top of the two supports.
2) For a little more depth (why I’m not sure), take a long piece of say, MDF and “notch” it so that it’s maybe 3-4″ past the stud, although I think I’d have to secure the inner portion of the shelf anyway (ie, tapcon into the sides of each concrete stud and put something there for support).
Any other ideas/suggestions?
This is in a utility room (okay also has the sub-panel and chest freezer and a weight machine in it), so it’s not a “finished” area per se and I’m just trying to free up a little more floor space with the platic shelving units I already have.
