Hi
I am going to add 5/4 X 3 1/2 rough sawn trim to existing windows. The house was built in the 40’s with 8 1/2 inch cedar lap siding. Most of them don’t have any trim and I would like to trim them all out properly. The windows were replaced at some time with vinyl sliders and don’t have a flange on them, they are just screwed into the framing around the windows. What would be the best way to make sure I don’t end up with water getting in? I am planning to build a jig for my laminate router to cut the lap siding out, Z metal on the top and Vicor flashing to seal things under the sides and bottom? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Hugh

I'm not sure I'm visuallizing your situation right. If you have 8 1/2" siding on the house what is it butting up to?
Is it possible to take a picture of this and post it?

The siding is butted right up to the window frame. Just some chaulking to keep the weather out. They didn't even foam around the window!
Sorry, no pics available, I'm stuck on a boat for 2 weeks.
I think I get how its done now.
Can you see space/air between the new vinyl windows and the old frame? If so you can still foam them, just use low expanding foam so you dont distort the window. Then use a good caulk over that to seal the window to the frame.
I'm assuming that the old window frames are proud of the sidding? If so cutting back the sidding will still leave you with a problem to deal with.
I might need a clarification on the last part to move forward.

yep, The window frame is proud of the lap siding. My goal is to make them more weather resistant and they also look cheap without trim. If I remove some of the siding , a piece of 5/4 primed white trim is almost flush with the window frame. I'll still have the same type of seam to deal with, now only I will have 2 of them.
Thanks for your help
I dont know that I'd want to create another seam.
Could you plane down the existing wood frame and then half lap the new 5/4 over that(rabbitt out the back side)? Or would that be getting to close to the new vinyl window inserts?
Im not a big fan of installing the new 5/4 even with the old window frame, seams like an unatractive solution.

I agree, seems like a bad solution....how do you feel about just adding the trim on top of the existing frames & letting the siding die behind it....too big? Too much cob-web space back in there?
Of course, you'd have to add drip cap at the header to get flashing under the siding.....
Your suggestion is how they do trim work on all the track homes down south.
I guess there is a big area for the spiders to live but hell, they gotta live somewhere!
