I’m going to be building a 10 by 14′ addition onto a stone foundation home in the near future. Before I sub the concrete work out I wanted to get some feedback on the best way to connect (or not) the new grade beam foundation to the existing limestone block foundation (18″ thick, fairly good condition minus one corner shifted in need of repointing, parging on the inside side due to bad drainage wash-out). I want to dive into this as educated as possible. I’m in the Canadian Prairies with a high clay content soil and very deep frost line. The addition will be crawlsapce only accessible from the basement, exterior will be clad with blue foam.

Sounds like you should check with the locals. Your soil type and deep frost could get you in trouble with advice from someone from somewhere else. General rule of thumb.... duplicate the same conditions as the limestone foundation, but it may have heaved or sunk uniformly over the years with no harm done. Now you're introducing a wild card and it may be a joker.
Ask a local excavator who's been around or (heaven's forbid ) ask the building inspector if he's been there awhile . Or check with a Civil Engineer, soils & foundations.
*Now Mike, you know that building inspectors are knowlegable public servants, certain to be of help on such a question. hehehe - jb
*Yes , Jim, I happen to know that your building inspector and mine both learned to read (they were raised as republicans and when they learned to read they became democrats) and they both read these posts. So I want to make sure they get a good plug now and then, heh heh heh

FHB had a good article about a year or so ago on what you're
looking to do. If I can find mine, I'll post the issue.
