OK, so I’m Santa Fe and Taos this weekend, visiting a friend, and his neighbor is building an adobe house. The real deal, stupid clay bricks with straw in them, and the structure is a full three stories tall.
So my question (should I ask Gabe?) is whether anyone knows of a building code for adobe, e.g., live load is so many thousand pounds, so abobe has to be so thick.
The other thing I looked at was wicking. The adobe is resting on footings (12″ wide and 18″ deep, but no gravel or membrane to separate the adobe from moisture in the ground. That clay would sure suck up water. Is that a problem?
I am just curious how adobe homes are built? Andy, does this sound like an article?
PS most of the newly constructed adobe structures there are fake: either conventional framing with stucco exteriors modified to look like adobe or CMU’s likewise modified.
