Have a customer who just bought an adobe house. She wants to put up a lot of shelves in her storage closet. The walls are all adobe. Any ideas as to the best way to anchor to adobe walls. This job already drove off one contractor who couldn’t get his wall anchors to hold. And, no I have no idea what he tried to use. This is a new one for me.

I believe I would mount shelf standards on a piece of plywood and anchor the plywood to the floor and ceiling.
On standards that go from floor to ceiling..
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming....
WOW!!! What a Ride!
I use really long lag screws and hope for the best

I work occasionally on a house with rammed earth walls. What works well on them is those plastic expansion anchors. I don't think I'd hang kitchen uppers with them, but they seem to have a lot of holding power. You might try one in a concealed location in your house, and try to pull it out.
Hi Tom,
I'm in the middle of an adobe house building project and have investigated similar questions. The local adobe guys recommend the use of threaded rod, epoxied into the hole using products from http://www.simpsonanchors.com.
I haven't tried this yet, but am considering this approach for when we hang our kitchen cabinets.
Good luck, Dan.
Dunc and IMERC probably have the best solution, but the typical "old way" was to drill a hole several inches deep, drive in a dowel of equal size, and screw into the center of the dowel. Some that I've seen were obviously old broom handles.
