I have a friend who is building a deck using Cedar and was wondering how to seal it? The contractor told him not to use Thompson’s Water seal, but to get a “good brand†and to wait a while before applying the sealer. He called me to ask for advice and that is why I am asking all of you for help. How long should he wait to apply a sealer to the cedar boards and what brand would be appropriate for this application if Thompsons is not the best? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Mike
P.S.- We live in New York, so the winters are bad, but terrible. And the summers are hot and humid like most places in the summer.

You need to get out more.

Fishrite,
A very wise former President of my country by the name Abraham Lincoln once said, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." You might be well served following this advice, but thanks for the post.

My point was not everyone has humidy where they live. We generally have no rain between May and October here. Despite what you may think, NY is not the center of the universe.
That said. Thompson's is a really crappy product. I wouldn't recommend it.

Fishrite,
Please refer to the post above your last posting for I fear that you are beginning to embarrass yourself, but because you probably don't know why I will explain.
I live in New York and I am asking for the advice of those who may not, so I am providing a little bit of information about the climate in New York so the advice I am given can be tailored to the type of climate in which I live. But thanks for sharing about your climate so I can tailor any further advice I need to give to you.

Okay, I'll try and make it clear to you.
Thompson's sucks.
I don't friggin care where you live, it still sucks.

Well, he caught me at a bad moment, day. But for him to assume that everyone has humidity problems all summer, just has not been outta the "house" in years.
Ya, I realize FHB's focus has mostly been in their NE neighborhood, probably due to logisticts and $$.
In my opinion, FHB, should really get out now and then.
Climate has everything to do with this.
Also, that's why we grow better tomatoes than you.
nah nah

FWIW I also was struck by the comment about the hot humid like everywhere statement. I guess I live in Somewhere other than Everywhere. But even out here in Somewhere, Thompsons still ain't worth a shid, might try Nowhere though and see what they have to report .

Me too--but I live in a place where it's as humid in winter (all 6-8 weeks of it) as summer.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Better? HA! MINE are still bigger.
With these pups here and work being crazy, I have yet to start my seeds..latest I've ever been, I believe.
So you will certainly have the first tomatoes. But I'll catch up! We're adding more planting area by clearing some trees, and making a a real life "canning shed" to get em processed more betterer.

I actually would love to take a poopie offa your hands. No pets allowed here though.
About the mater's tho, I'm pretty sure we took the trophy last year as far as the most mater's per plant: 1866 off of 4 plants. Tomatoes love the heat here.
We gotta get the "How Does You're Garden Grow? thread going again. Where is McDesign when we need him?

Little late with the 'maters this year? Put ours in on the 8th. You do get better heat though; we have a bit too much marine influence in Pleasant Hill; only the Sweet 100's did well last year (not complaining mind you).
The real kicker is I put out two summer squash plants last weekend. In the nursery for something else and saw them - what the heck. Worse case I'll just have to replant in a month or two.
rxmpo,
Welcome to Breaktime. This isn't the NY Times Op Ed debate board. It's a mostly light-hearted group of older tradesmen/contractors who enjoy sharing their hard earned knowledge, sometimes with a playful zinger tossed in for effect.
You've swallowed someone's bait and run off quite bit of line, when the hook has no barbs and can be easily avoided or removed. In other words, no need to trot out your formal debating style. It's not going to win you any points nor impress anyone here.
If you're unsure of another's intent, let it go, don't reply. Someone else will soon be along with an explanation which will be more to the point and easier to understand.

I need to get back in here more often.
Now, do ya suppose our origional poster maybe learned a little something that his grandmother might have taught him about flies, honey and vinegar...?
I'm willing to bet if he popped back in and made nice, there are most likely a slew of folks hovering around who would jump right in and give him the advice he was looking for.
And besides! Everyone knows that NY isn't the center of the universe... DougU lives in the center of the universe....

hey Doug,I was thinking you were close to the center. Maybe 100 miles. Everybody knows that Des Moines thinks it's the only city in Iowa

I think we can agree that the whole state is the CENTER, but your right, DM is the only city in the state! The rest are just towns.

Larry, that might be the center of the US but were talking CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE!
And seeings how we do have some humidity and some heat in the summer I thought the remark about the two was OK.

Actually I was kinda amused by the guy's thread title. Kinda shines some light on his intelligence level. Besides... you gotta consider the (geographic) source.
It's idjits like you that give us New Yawkers a bad name.
Perhaps your "friend" has a computer and some communication skills of his/her own.
Then he/she could access the site and ask his/her own question.

Just as a point of reference, I'd say fishrite was taking a stab at being humorous.
As time goes by I think you'll see that in a lot of the give and take here.
Relax and enjoy yourself while your question is kicked around.
And remember to duck occasionally!
By the way, I've used thomson twice, years ago. NEVER again! Could not be more unhappy with the results...buic
Couldn't agree with you more ( re: Thompsons ) I used it once about 20 years ago on a customers deck and I've been warning people about it ever since.

Speaking of both those things, when I went looking for it, I found some information that Brazilian rosewood oil might not be the right thing to buy. I sent the company an e-mail asking for their position. I have some cedar that needs sealing and I wasn't entirely impressed with the Cabot I used last time (re: longevity) so I hope they have a good answer. :)
Interesting article.
It didn't mention any of the oil based coverings.
To tell ya the truth I'm not even sure if "brazillian rosewood oil" in Penofin is actually the real stuff or it just sounds good like brazillian cherry, which I guess sounds better than Jatoba.
Let us know what ya hear back from Penofin.

Penofin is great stuff! Would be my first choice.Siekkens makes a great deck product, but to install it takes a tent and heat to meet their specs.Thompsons is like everyone agrees, just Krap. It is thinned down wax that lasts six months in the UV rays

Besides maybe fishrite is just jealous that you live in the NY area! Even if you didn't get the advice you sought the post serves as a bump and keeps your inquiry to the top of the page, so not a total loss.
I agree that Thompsons isn't the product that your friend is looking for. Don't mistake their marketing department for their quality control dept. There are better products out there. I'd opt for advice from someone in your region over mine.
