Lots of talk here about insulation, air infiltration, energy efficient homes, etc… Even my previous questions about “Icynene” have the theme of a tight house. What is the general opinions out there about tight homes vs the need for a “healthy” house to breath. I know about heat recovery units (or other names to some) and am planning on using a unit to vent the baths and laundry room – which should give me enough air changes for fresh air. The unit will return air to the cold air return, and the HVAC unit will run with constant fan for circulation of air… The ERV unit is rated at 210 cfm, which will result in approximately 1 air change per hour (assuming 0.000000) for all other infilration rates.
Also, what about “safe” air with the use of a fireplace or cooktop.
It seems that old houses without insulation let lots of air out and in – and therefore would cost a lot to heat and cool – but allowed for plenty of fresh, healthy air to be circulated throughout the house….
Please give lots of opinions and thoughts….
