those ugly vynal windows come in other colors...

yes .. "off white" .. and "brown".

but how can you have a really cool looking house 'like they used to build' if every damn window on every new structure is the SAME shiny (usually) white 'plastic'!!?

I dunno ... wish there were a huge plethora of choices other than what's become 'standard white'.

There are lots of really nice windows out there - problem is, they tend to be expensive, and HOs don't usually think about window treatment, which is too bad - when you're talking about an investment of $200,000 +, what's a couple of thou more to give a home the windows it deserves?

I got some beige ones from Loew's - not quite as dark as Anderson's beige (terratone?). Decent windows too. Pay extra for the color, but I've had quite a few positive comments.

About a year ago, all the new McMansions here started sporting tan ugly vinyl windows.

Very few have anything else, they're all going for the biggest house with the most hacked up roof.

Windows cost money that could be better spent adding 3 or 4 more valleys to the roof.

Fake rock too, can't forget that stuff. Goes nicely with vinyl windows, especially those big round fake river rocks. Can't miss those from under a half mile.

Some of the premium window manufacturers will custom make windows in an array of standard colors -- lots more than white, brown, and in-between.  Maybe Marvin is one of them?

Andersen's Terratone can be painted according to their instructions.

Another technique is to paint the window trim (not the frames of the windows, but the trim you apply around the window units).  This can be enhanced by framing the rough opening for the windows in 2 x 4 lumber in walls that are 2 x 6.  The interior faces of the lumber are in plane, so the window is recessed from the outside by 2 inches.  The trim then forms a shadow box and takes on more visual weight, while the window frames recede in impact.

The small window in the photo in this post shows the effect.  The window is Terratone, but the trim is aubergine.  The window frames are hardly noticed (even in real life, not just in the bad photo). http://forums.taunton.com/tp-breaktime/messages?msg=73760.5

I love Loewen Windows - I used to PR for them, and would almost have worked for free, their product and their ethics were that good! Alas, the bank account (not to mention the bank manager!) wouldn't stretch that far.
