Has anybody bought the less expensive aluminum brake that Home Depot sells?
I’ve been renting a brake. The $1000+ price tag has kept me from purchasing. I’ve done a few searches for a used one, but have not found one. I hate the idea of buying a “cheap” tool, but since going on my own, I only used a brake for a total of two weeks over the past year. Any recommendations on a brake (TapCo, etc.)?

The Depot sells everything they rent. The more it has been rented the cheaper they sell it for. This is how they keep their rental fleet new. Ask them for a price the next time you are there.
Just a thought

*I gave 850 for a 10 1/2 foot brake that was on a display floor . Just use one for a day or two from the depot and see if you like it. It is nice to not have to run around to find a brake for small jobs.
*I have had my 8'-6" ProII Tapco Break since 1988 and it is still working great. My advise would to buy a good one. You will have it when you need it and there is always metal to be bent.
*if you wait until the weather breaks, you will see a bunch of them in local paper in most good size cities. lots' of guys unload them for newer models or to get some cash. In bought my 8'6" tapco for 100.00 about ten years ago from a guy who was getting out of the business. I bought a 50.00 tuneup kit and it keeps on working.
*That's if the HD in your area has rentals. my area's so behind the times that there are people here who still use horse and buggy.
*A new Tapco Pro III usually goes for about $850-900 (that's in the Detroit area). Check your local vinyl siding supplier. I paid the same for mine about 4 years ago. They have a variety of lengths, throat depths, and capacities avaliable. The other major brand is Van Mark. Both are headquartered in the Detroit area so your price may be a little higher than it is here.
*I purchased an 8 foot brake from HD a year ago. Prior to that I rented breaks when I needed it. It ended up being cheaper to buy the 8 foot HD break for $600 then to rent. At any rate, I am going to go into the business full time in the spring, in the beginning I will continue to use the HD break, but I will, when money allows buy a high quality 10 foot break. The break I rented was better than the HD and it did make tighter bends. If it is going to be used only on occasion, I don't think it’s a bad tool. I have been able to get some real nice work out of it. If on the other hand you can buy a good used break for under $600, get it.Jamie
