Anchoring posts for stair railing
I need to anchor 3 1/2″ maple posts for stair railing and am looking for ideas. A walkway has been framed with a double LVL at the edge; underside is already sheetrocked.

If you explain the situation with more detail, maybe someone can help.
I think the posts will have to be attached on the surface of the walkway. There is no way that I can see to get down into the floor system to have an elongated post go thru the subfloor to be secured. The design calls for the railing to be pretty much along the line of the dbl LVL beam. I am curious about results anyone may have had using some type of angle or metal L-bracket to secure the post to the floor.
Get a steel newel post fastening plate. they are 1/4" steel and have screw holes pre- drilled in them for screws into the newel and the floor. They are about 5-1/2" x 7". I would use a bit of construction to fasten the plate to both the floor and the newel in addition to the screws.
Keylocks are another option, So is a big 1/2' hanger bolt. I find the sreel plated to be the fastest and best option. Get steel though, don't settle for those cheap and dinky ones sold at some home centers.
I agree. I've used them before and they work great. Just have to rout in the thickness of the plate into the subfloor so when it's screwed in it's flush with the floor. Finish flooring goes right over it. Works very well especially if you have solid material below to screw in to.
I concur VT
