So my order will be here today……well, at least half the order I’m having delivered today… 20 of about 40 sq.
5 1/2″ exposure over Cedarbreather onto CDX ply.
What kinda nail gun should I buy?
Staples? Finish nails?
I already have a finish gun but I’m guessing staples might be better.
If I buy a staple gun what else can I use that gun for?
On the Cedar bureau site they say that I can in fact use staples….
any recommondos?
Be well

Most roofers around here use the wide 1" staple guns I like the 1/2" because I can use it for other things like fencing, railing, and skirting. Be sure and buy Galvanized staples.
Two staples is like four nails holding shake..........

I prefer nails over staples and hand driven over gun fed.
but for you...
A nail is too easy to over drive in cedar shingles when it comes out of a gun. An overdriven nail is just like splitting it and reducing lifespan. So if you use nails, you need a gun that can be adjusted easy at the tip.
that makes staples an easier choice, but you still have to be careful with overdriving them and they are wider so that makes sorting to choose each piece more difficult. You need to overlay edges more like a minimum 2" instead of 1-1/4".
If I were you ( OK - I just picked myself up off the floor after that imagry, LOL) I would get a 1/2" crown x 2" L staple gun. The wide crown staples are for - well, I reallyu don't know what thet're good for. I see 'm used for some asphalt shingles, but not on my jobs.

I have the Senco SNS45 staple gun and it's been flawless after I figured out that it likes 100 PSI+
Don't know anything about the recommended fasteners on the roof, but for sidewall shingles I've been using stainless staples and have about $500 worth in about 25 squares of work. Check the price if you're going to go stainless.
Mike Smith was talking about guns he uses to shoot HD galv headed nails for sidewall.... Bostitch maybe.
andy, if you don't stop screwin around i'm gonna send gunner over to straighten you out...
stop already with the staples... you live in a coastal area.. you're using a 30 year material over cedar breather... a staple is too thin.. and the galvanizing sucks.. they are too subject to corrosion...
get a yourself a good sidewall gun like a Bostich N64, with an adjustable nose.. you can get any coil nail for it you want.. either bostich.. or even Maze..
i'd use a galvanized 6d in your case, because you are fastening thru the cedar breather...
the N64 will also come in handy for sidewall... and you can get SS nails for it
let someone else use the staples.. you stick to the nails..
BTW , i saw an N64 at Quaker Lane Tool in North Kingstown, RI, yesterday for $300 , it was a show demo..
had about a couple hundred nails run thru it.. as close to new as youu getMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

I looked on the tool crib of the norths site and can't even find the n64.
Why is that gun one of the best in your mind?
I sort of agree with the 6d finish and was leaning towards either 6d galvies or SS.
Something about staples rubs me the wrong way.
I have the Bostitch N88 RH nailer and I like it...don't love it due to jams but I do like it. Too bad I can't use that on the perfections. Its almost new.
Wish I could use my Bostitch roofing gun...lol.I know, I know, I ain't stupid.
I'm even still considering pounding nails the old fashioned way like I've always done on wood shingles but I only have one life and around 40 sq to bang up not to mention the walls.
When I saw that pile of shingles in front of the addition I took a deep breath.
Its one thing to put up 40 sq of roofing......ordering it, and thinking about it, and another thing to see it stacked up high in shrink wrap. whewwwwwwww!!!
Man thats a lot of shingles. And I'm only looking at half the roof and not even thinking bout the sidewalls........ok I'm "thinkin' bout it.
So whats your consensous on the "best" gun for me to use in this application? N64?

no.. whatta ya think i posted N64 for..
no "finish nails " either... 5d or 6d ring shank... galv....
the N64 has an adjustable nose... you can get SS nails for it.. you can use it on your siding and exterior trim...
there are others out there... that's just the one we buy.. still have our N63.... got hte N64.. i'll probably buy another N64 for a big siding job we've got comming up

You can find the N64 at the tool crib by searching for "N64C".
Or try this link:

$400 and free shipping. If you get their catalog, a lot of times they have $25 or $50 off sales to lure you in.
I put up quite a few square of cedar shingles this summer for a guy who made me use his Makita asphalt roofing gun (using roofing nails!) I told him it would split at least every other shingle if not every one, but it didn't. Only split a few, but it still wasn't the right thing to do. He just wanted to use up 4 cases of roofing nails he had at home.
So if I ever decide to move forward out of the Pleistocene area, I have to remember N64, right?

Andy, I'd go with what Mike says about the siding nailer. I don't know which one, but I just finished (almost) over 12 sq of R&R's on sidewalls. Both the supplier and another supplier's salesman who stopped by the job reccommended a siding nailer. Shoots a nail very similiar to what me and the kid used to hand nail this job.
Good luck. I think about comin out there to give ya a hand once in a while...........

Andy, I have a N64C and it's a great gun.
Except.
It hates generic nails and I can't find the real deal locally.
For 40 squares you'll probably need about a million dollars worth of those SS nailzzzzzzzz!!
Joe H
Joe...CL and John collins,
Thank you my brothers with guns.
Going to check it out today on line and make a few calls locally for both guns.
Doubt I'll use SS. Rather use galvies due to my budget and I've never ever had problems with galvies before specially out of a gun.
Sometimes with galvies and a hammer you can knock the galv off but thats even rare.
I may have to start this out with a hammer till I can secure a place locally that has what I need.
thank you again and

The n88 is a framing gun. The shanks on those nails are way to big for shingles. You need an n64 or a senco scn55. They shoot the same nails. The only nail I would ever use is a genuine shake and shingle nail, either in bulk or collated from Swan Secure Fasteners. They are the only ones I know of that sell a real collated shingle nail. It is exactly the same as the hand nail version. Neither bostitch or senco sell the correct nail collated for either gun. If you can't get the right nail in collated form I would nail it by hand. I don't trust staples for much of anything besides underlayment.
Andy, if you finish real quick you could always on-sell the near new N64 to Mike ;-)

I think I'm going with this new gun
Siding coil nailer CN565S
The guy I buy my guns from (thats all he sells) tells me he's been getting rave reviews from builders.
Gave me tons of info about all the guns and mentioned the one you told me about along with the Hitachi he says is also real good but from the reviews he's gotten from his customers which naturally are all builder and some that do nothing but wood shingles..they all flipped out over this gun. $400.
We spoke a lot about nails.SS is "about" $500 more on 40 sq than galvies..then theres dbl dipped galvies that comes in somewhere in the middle although the dbl dipped only come in at 1 3/4" so forget that anyway.....I want at least 1 7/8" (I measured the depth I need to sink into). 1 7/8" is perfect.
I just need top deciede weather or not to go with the extra $500 on my house..I have soooooo many extra things to do here it sure adds up fast as you know and I can't pass along the price on "my" house to a customer yet wanna do the right job.
The nails that were in this roof to begin with were certainly not SS and there wasn't ever a problem so......hmmmm....ugh. Decisions decisions.....
Anyway, I'll let you know what I think of this gun..They can have it here along with the nails tomorrow morning or later today.
Thanks again

Andy, that link - under fastner specs says that it handles nails up to 2-1/2"
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
piff
and?..why would I need more than that for wood perfections or side wall shakes?
I measured the perfections at a 5 1/2" exposure along with CB and the 5/8" ply and that totals about 1 7/8" or less.
Hurry up and tell me what yer a thinkin' I just ordered it.spose to be here tomorrow.
Thanks
andy"My life is my practice"
What I'm thinking is that I thought you said that you couldn't get nails longer than 1-3/4" but the site says up to 2-1/2" which means that you should be able to get nails that long. I'd be looking for about 2-1/4" myself. the 1-7/89" will probably do but just barely get through the plywood.
Don't foget you want longer on the ridge too.

I measured the roofing w/ the sheathing and the CB and the shingles but now that you shook me up a lil' bit (thanks)I'm going to play it safe and use the 2 1/4" on the additions and use the 1 7/8 on the skip sheathing.....
I know/think the 1 7/8 will work on everything but why chance any irregularites.
Thanks piff..........PS. I asked em' if Piffinails would work but he said he never heard of them.....go figure.
Be ready to roof

Paslode Impulse nailer with 6d galv ring shanks. You need at least 5d if not longer because of the extra thickness of the cedar breather. Staples are for hooking two pieces of paper together.
