Scary - I just thought of that filler strip idea last night. 3/8 strip for 1/2 dw or 1/2 strip for 5/8 dw.

*Hi Rob,I've done it this way, but with a six-inch wide initial slot, and the infill was just the edge of a piece of same-thickness GWB. One edge of the repair is factory-taper to factory-taper, the other edge is factory taper to butt-cut.Next time I'll try dropping down one thickness of GWB.Steve
*Fred, that's way too simple. I'd hoped you would complicate my life. I already thought about the band joist. I held it back 2 in. from the edge, filled the space with 2-in. UltraR, and sheathed over it. That gives me something like R 16 at the joists, a number I can live with. Of course, the sheathing couldn't be nailed to the band joist, but it is nailed to the mudsill and and bottom plate. That may be an issue in seismically active or high wind areas, but I don't think it's a problem in my sheltered Connecticut location.Thanks.Andy
