What’s the best freebie download to get rid of those damn pop up advertisements that are stuck to more and more web sites? I’m not interested in life insurance, car insurance, or any other kind of insurance. Sprint & MCI both call me at least twice a week,so I don’t need that either. Not interested in any Capital One Visa Cards, don’t want any cheap airline tickets too.
So what’s the best way to make them go away and stay away without making something else stop working? Joe H

Joe,
Try
http://www.tudogs.com
or
http://www.tucows.com
Both these are excellent sources for freebie software and I'm sure you'll find something at one or other of them
You could switch to Opera as a browser -- it has the facility built in to kill pop-ups
*i it has the facility built in to kill pop-ups Well, yes and no: many of the offending sites are now adding logic that prevents the main page from completing until the pop-up is completed and has several seconds of view time. The other new trick is the virtual floating window that's hung out in front of the main window for 10-20 seconds - there's no way to kill it
*I've never understood the logic behind pop-ups -- they are so bloody irritating there's no way I'd ever buy something advertised on one.
*Pop up ads are annoying. OTOH what's it costing you to visit those web sites? The purpose of the ads is to pay for the traffic to the web site. The web site owner pays for the server space according to the traffic count. The more traffic the more they pay. When ad revenues fall short, they have to make it up out of pocket. By circumventing the pop up ads you run the risk of sinking that web site. If it's one you visit often, it becomes a choice of supporting the site by shutting a few pop up windows. If it bothers you that much, offer to kick in a few bucks to help the site owner if they will kill the pop ups.JAPOV
*You can mess with disabling java, and then re-enable it when you need it. But that's kind of a pain.
*Go to http://www.analogx.com/welcome.htmand download Pow!, a utility which will delete any window on your browser. You configure it by adding the offending window's title to a list. Easy to use, free, effective.
*Sure is strange around here without Luka to answer these questions. My solution: switch your browser to Opera, and set your preferences to "disable popups". Works great- I haven't seen an ad for spy-cams in quite a while...
*Joe,Do a search for 2 freebies that are supposed to be good. One is called Popup Killer, the other is Popup Stopper. I think the second one can be found at http://www.panicware.com.
*Thanks, I'll have a try. Ian has it right, I ain't gonna buy it, and if I was I wouldn't buy theirs. Joe H
*Thanks Ken, Popup Stopper installed, working. Joe H
*Barry, I disagree. If a site is worth anything they can find ways to support it, just like Taunton. There are very few that can make it on web pages alone. It's easy to create a web site but hard to run a business and sell your product. If you have a good product or what people need they will buy it. steve
*Cami,Did some thing happen to Luka?T
*His hard-drive is dead --- possibly a virus, although that sounds unlikely given his advice to everyone to use Anti-Virus software, but out of action anyway.
*SteveI guess we are talking about different types of sites.I was thinking of sites that don't have anything to sell. They are either for support or info. To keep running they depend on ads. There are still a few out there. The pop ups are a pain in any case.
*I downloaded one called "Pop-off" but now have my java settings enabled to stop all the other crap that the unscrupulous are doing to ruin my computer and get me in trouble. As for sites supporting themselves other ways, its surprisingly difficult to get good sponsorship if you are putting out honest information. The Taunton Websites are (I'm assuming) profitable because we supply fodder to the creative minds at the magazines who can in turn write profitable articles that will attract advertisers and subscribers to the magazines. A friend of mine runs http://www.canadiancanoeroutes.com , a website dedicated to wilderness canoeing in Canada. It is a site that is heavily used by guides, canoeists and outfitters. alot of people are making alot of money using the information he has in his webpages. So far he has been able to attract 3 advertisers (in spite of getting around 1000 hits per hour on his homepage) and is running heavy debt to maintain the website. He will not put popups on the site, but then he isn't making money on it either.
