Any DISsatisfaction with Cabot Products?
We’re about to set the corbels and knee braces on our new house and I’d like to coat them before we install them. The paint store recommends Cabot stains as their best product for this application. The wood is West coast douglas fir in 4 X 6 and 4 X 8 sizes with corbel details sawn on the ends.
I’m considering the linseed oil-based version. The salesman said that only one coat on bare wood is required. Am I doing any harm by adding another coat? Is Cabot regarded as a high quality stain?
I’m in the Southern California area, so brand availibility may be an issue.
Thanks!
Jim

Cabot stain is the only stain I use on decks, it wears well and protects the wood. I recommend recoating every 5 years for nonwearing surfaces, every 2-3 years for decking, cap rails, etc.
But why stain and not primer/paint for your architectural details? In this case, I would think paint would provide greater protection and minimize the frequency required to recoat.
BTW, I use solid stain for maximum protection, which is almost like a paint. Decking stain has even more pigment for even more protection.

I would make sure I had a source for a second coat...won't take as much second coat, but may be necessary. Otherwise Cabot's is obvioucly quality stuff.
