Anyone do this Mike Sloggett workshop?

andybuildz | Posted in Construction Techniques on September 15, 2009 07:37am

The supplier I’ve been using to get all my materials for a very big job I’m closing in on invited me to attend this workshop tomorrow.
I know it’s sort of a traveling road show like the ones Gary Katz does.

Wondering if anyone attended these classes and how it was.. http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&pid=gmail&attid=0.1.0.1&thid=123bddca26d8f4be&mt=application%2Fpdf

I suppose every lil’ bit helps so I reckon I’ll make the effort and go.

Your link doesn't work for me (so I don't know what the workshop is on), but after sitting in for his JLC Live session, I'd encourage you to go.

In fact, I wished that I'd seen more of his other sessions.

He's a whiz at practical math, and I'd bet you learn something there.

I don't think you'd find it the least bit boring or not worth your time.

If you go (and you will, right? LOL) make sure to post back here with what you learned.

I know Huber says the fasteners don't have to be taped... sheathing wouldn't pass inspection unless it was taped $$$$<<Yeh...the sheathing has to be taped. A 90' 3 1/2" roll goes for just under $25 but you're not dealing with tarps on the roof or tar paper. The tape does an amazin job of sealing all windows and doors etc which you should be doing anyway.
Another biggie is it's a one man operation that goes pretty fast from what I saw.The biggest neg to me is the cost of the tape but if you add everything together withthe time you save and how tight the job comes out...not to mention everyone stopping to look at your job b/c it looks different.....(have your yard signs up). Also is you're installing Hardie you can see where every stud is unlike house wrap which covers your nails. There's also the spacer dots on each panel just like onthe Advantech floor making nailing and laying roof and wall coverings out that much easier.Like I said b/4...if nothing else...using it just on your roof additions makes it easier so ouy don't need to mess with tarps.View Image

as usual, I'm making this clear as mud LOL BI wanted to see the whole house wrapped in tyvek because the fasteners were penetrating the sheathing... well ya. The seams were already all taped. GC called Huber, who offered no help or documentation that would satisfy inspections... actually they did offer some help... they sold the gc some more tape to cover all the staple holes <G>just sayin', you may want to check with your inspections people about what they'll expect to see? Unless you really want to work out that "free" tape gun.http://www.tvwsolar.com

just sayin', you may want to check with your inspections people about what they'll expect to see?<<<They actually covered that in the workshop. The LI rep was there giving his shtick and showed photos around LI where it was being used. Some of the towns like in the HAmptons are real strict and they seemed to have no problem.I most def will check first anyway. I'd only plan on doing the roofs on this particular job anyway just to avoid all the tarps/work alone.View Image

      >>>If you go (and you will, right? LOL) make sure to post back here with what you learned.<<<Spent the day with Mike Sloggett and a buncha LI builders. Real nice 'Road Show'!!
Sorry I missed Gary Katz's when he was here a few months ago but I was busy that day having a colonoscopy.... Sorry Gary...lolI tend to walk away from these events feeling stoopider than when I walked in.
So many things I need to still learn......but thats why I do these events among everything else I can think of. I did walk away learning quite a bit and if nothing else I always pick up a cpl of things I'll for sure delve further into now that I have the bug.He really went over a lot. From frame to finish...mostly framing and pushing Advantech and the Zipsystem.I do have to say I was real impressed with the Zipsytem. I remember it being discussed here a cpl of years back. I think Justin was asking us about using it.The tape is what makes the stuff expensive but after listening to their shtick as to why it's the best thing since sliced whole grain organic bread : ) I do have to say I for sure will use it when I have the opportunity.I'm getting veryyyyy close to signing a very big remodel and thought about the hassle it is to tarp half the house (and more) every day(the roofs).
Tarps on and off..on and off...ugh.If I use the Zipsystem even just on the roof it'd save me money in the cost of tarps and putting them on and taking them off every day.....not to mention it's better then any house wrap or felt paper IMO.Heyyyyyy...I even won a raffle there today.... a $100+ Zipsystem taping gun..with tape!! Yayyyyyyy....now I 'have to' try it....lol. Maybe I'll start with a dog house...lol.Mike covered construction calculators for all kinds of situations. We discussed how using a mositure meter in more situations then one thinks is as important as using your tape measure. His laser tape measure btw was pretty amazing. I didn't think they worked as well as they seem to but I'm guessing the one he used was as expensive as a good laser level.I spoke with him during several of the breaks and found out some interesting stuff about his thoughts on FHB now-a-daze which apparently is in line with a lot of what other builders I spoke to there felt....same as whats going on in some of the threads here.Basically that it's become more of a DIY'r rag.Overall it was a real nice day and I hear that the "Road Show' may be repeated with Mike and Gary here on LI. Mike Sloggett apparently lives about a half hour from me. I told him I wished I knew that when I had Tipi Fest here...He'd have been a great asset!!View Image

I don't know much about it. Would it be significantly better than using plywood and sheet underlayments to keep things dry?

Most people that I see use Tyvek or equivalent never tape it the way they're suppose to anyway...or even tape it at all. This stuff (Zipsystem) is...as it reads...is a whole 'system'. Which actually is VERY easy to use!!View Image

Thanks for the update amigo. Glad you enjoyed yourself there, and came away with a prize!Go see Gary next time you have a chance. He puts on a good show as well. In fact you should make a trip up for JLC next year. And I'll say that Mike was incredibly gracious in answering my silly DIY questions about framing and siding. I'll admit that I feel a bit like a spy sitting in on those lectures, but I really just like to learn. LOLFunny about the Zip wall stuff. There's a commercial project a few blocks from me that I run past. It's stick framed from the ground up, which I thought odd, as I would have thought it to be done in steel or concrete. But they are covering the walls with Zip, or at least it looks like that stuff. I'll take a photo next time I run by there. I've seen the roof panels before, but never the wall sheathing. So if you do use it on the big project, take some photos!Laser tape... they are fun. And very useful, too. Much easier than bending a tape into a corner and guestimating. Need to take a series of measurements? Bang, bang, bang. And then you can walk over to the saw and cut them in order. It's a little too accurate at times, maybe.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

Now I gotta have my laser ruler and laser level and construction calculator in one tool box now?
See what happens every time I go to one of these events?
          Can I take all my tools with me when I die?Wait a minute...maybe I did...hmmmmmm

Oh, you old hippies, not trusting any tool under 30. LOLBut, yeah, the laser tapes work well. I got one because all my work is solo, and they make life much easier for me. No construction calc yet for me, but there is an app for the iphone that does much the same work that I should just grab. One less tool, and then you've got more room in the toolbox for some new toy.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

Wow.... my husband would want the  1st one, the most expensive one.  But reading the reviews on Amazon  this one is the best.  But that kind of money buys alot of tape measures.  Now that I am looking at it, It must take some time to adjust to using this if all you have ever used is a tape measure.

I wanted to surprise him with it but maybe I had better ask him first.   In Cdn $ it will be alot more and it's to expensive to sit in the tool box.

            thanks for sending me these.

You could do what I did.I went to Microsoft Live Search (now http://www.bing.com and you've got to use Explorer. No Firefox or Safari, or it won't work), did a search for the laser measurer I wanted, and used the buy now feature on ebay and paid with paypal.Saved myself 30% that I got as a cashback rebate after 60 or 90 days (can't remember what it really is).So I got the Leica D3 for what I would have spent on the D2.The rebate percentages aren't as crazy now as they used to be, but I have seen them around 15% of late. It changes, so if you see it at a high discount, don't wait.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb
