You need to plan this out carefully or you will be looking at problems down the road. Blocking, flashing and that lap problem better be figured out before you start. Someone might be able to send you a diagram but I can't. Have only had to redo or eliminate sitebuilt sunburst's. Usual problems are nothing to nail to, improper flashing, poor layout of lap siding as you get that fan straight up.
Small, factory built nail ons are usually plastic and self sealed (still gotta flash to surrounding siding properly) and look tiny but ok from the ground.
And if you do the custom thing, maybe use a pump jack or reg. scaffold so you can work on the whole picture up there. Get all your stuff up there in the morning and maybe you'll be able to bring it down that night.
Remember......think.
*Matt, if you enter "SUNBURST" in this website Fine homebuilding index you get some articles found. If you have the back issues of FH you're in luck, or else try the library, or maybe someone here will look it up...
*You will have to start with a semicircular center piece. Larger is better so you don't have to taper your claps down to close to a point.(I am assuming you are using clapboards) don't make it to big though, try to scale it in proportion to the size of the gable. You will need to taper the rays other wise you will have too much thickness at the center and they wont lay flat. Cut the taper on the bottom edge for this same reason, it may not seem logical at first but after you try couple the other way the light bulb should go on!! I have only done smaller gables and entrances. I would think that as the gable gets bigger you would need to use wider claps. Any one else out there have any ideas? Hope this is of some help. Tony
*tony's on the right track. i use a plane for fitting as the laps tend to taper and change angle from center medalion towards outside edge. Also I prefer to build the whole thing in the shop on a bench with 1/2" cdx ply backing and glue (gorilla glue is my favorite) and then install it in one fell swoop. sure is easier than having all that time, tools and wind up in the air and up and down the ladder.
