I’m going to be building an exterior stair for an architect friend who likes to see how complicated he can make things. It’ll be a second means of egress for his 3-decker. He wants to use only two posts, with the stair wrapping around them, each run is 1/2 a flight, with landings at each end. Hard to describe, but picture a helix. Each landing will have a step in the middle, to fit everything in. One landing butts against the house, the other hangs out in mid-air. The biggest problem I can see is a see-saw effect when you stand on the outside corner of the landings. I suggested steel brackets, but if possible he’d rather do it all in wood. Anyone have suggestions?
