I have an unfinished basement that needs sheet rock on the ceiling, the walls are already done (Yea I know, do the ceiling first, but someone else did the walls first). The problem is the joists are only 2x 8 joists 16o.c. for a 12 foot span. There are X braces at the midway point. I started to fur the ceiling with 1×3 16o.c. glued and screwed to give more support ( keep the joists from twisting) Also furring to level out the uneven joists and to drop the ceiling down to meet the existing sheetrock on the walls ( the rock on the walls is an inch short of meeting the joists) and so there are no but joints in the rock.

SO my questions are, will 2×8 big enough to hang sheetrock on? Can I use ½ rock with joist 16 o.c.?

The 2X8s are likely fine, although that's about maxed out.
Do they have a decent "feel" when you walk on them?
Yea, they "feel" decent. It is a big open livingroom and dinning room area above it. No walls and little furnishings.
You're fine. Just like I would do it all. Keep the furring at 16" OC

Do yourself a favour and install "Z" channels to sound proof the basement from the upstairs. The gyproc is held away from the floor joists by a metal channel.
I'll try to attach a picture here. The red lines are where the piffin screws go.
