I’ve been recently renovating my house which is a Cape Cod made in the 50’s. As I was tearing into the ceiling of my living room, which was composed of a half inch of stucco or plaster that was laid onto a quarter inch piece of sheetrock. Behind that there was blown in insulation that was stuck to the sheetrock with some type of black tar. How do I find out if this insulation has asbestos?

There are companies who do such testing--maybe in the yellow pages?
Yep, look in the yellow pages under "asbestos". A few years ago someone quoted a price of around $100 for a test, but I don't know how representative that is.
