I just purchased a house that was built in 1919, it is about 1000 sqaure feet of living space and about three hundred square feet of basement. In the basement is a furnace a little bit bigger than a volkswagen bug; with about a three inch gas line comming in to feed the monster. I would like to replace the big guy but can’t just yet, too many other things to fix first. There is asbestos wrap on the furnace ducts I just want to contain it so it does not flake off. Any suggestions?

Don't mess with it if you don't have to. Asbestos is an airborne hazard only if you make it so.
Avoid disturbing it if possible ,wrap it in plaster of Paris bandage or spray on coats of dilute latex paint using a plant sprayer (pump up type) with as little pressure as possible to drizzle the paint on.If you have to remove any, there are systems which wrap round 4' or so of pipe and let you work in a glove bag with tools and water spray sealed in side.It is slow but it does work. All the asbestos is disposed with the bag.If you have to wet the asbestos always add a little dish soap to the water to lower the surface tension and improve penetration
