My parents have just bought a new (older) house in Ontario and to their horror have discovered it has asbestos insulation in the attic and around the ducts. The stuff around the ducts is hard and not flaking/chipping or suffered no water damage. The stuff in the attic, from what I gather is loose, but in good condition. Although they have not decided what to do over the long term, I want to take my two girls – age 5 & 6 to visit for a couple of weeks in the summer – any opinions on the risk dangers to them? Thanks

Just curious...how did they determine that the attic insulation contained asbestos?

My dad was pretty sure from what he knew about it - (it seems to be more of a big deal in England where we are originally from), to recognise it. He is very concerned with pollutants in the home etc. and he did a lot of checking and calling to determine that it is asbestos, however he took a sample to a company in Ottawa who I guess specialise in the removal and management of asbestos and they sent it in to be tested.
Hope this helps!

Take it to a lab that has no connection with removal services whatsoever. I doubt the loose stuff is asbestos, but nothings impossible.
Keep the windows open and the kids out of the attic.
Theres tons of data available on line to quell this sickening panic. It has been created largely due to bloodsucking lawyers for people that had severe hypersensitivity to the stuff, and also smoked and spent their careers working with the stuff. A generalization - but your kids will be fine. Airborne fiberglass is worse for your lungs and you probably nver gave it a thought did you?
