I have a house that was built in 1907. Sometime, I would guess in the late 50’s or early 60’s new siding was added over the old siding. I am sure it was the rage when it was installed. However, now it is very unattractive to the eye. The siding consists of 18″I 12″ (approx.) with a scalloped lower edge. It appears to be made of some sort of cement or Asbestos? Many of the pieces are cracked and some are missing. The color is built into the material. I am sure that it was sold as a maintenance free siding. To paint it would be horrible. I don’t think that I want to side over it. I believe that I would like to remove it and expose the ship lap siding beneath and repaint that surface.
I am afraid to remove the siding as I have been told that it contains asbestos. It would most likely be hard to dispose of it in the landfill if that were the case plus the health hazards involved with such an endeavor. How can I find out what this material is without tipping off the officials. I may want to remove this in the dark of night and smuggle it into the landfill concealed in the many trash cans located in the alley up and down the alley.
