Any ideas on removing that dried up asphalt adhesive from bricks. I will be replacing the flashing but the adhesive was applied to span the gap so the bricks need cleaning w/o ruining them. The new flashing will be done right by placing them into the angle-cut grout lines between bricks and pointed up with grout-colored caulk.

Usually I find that the dried asphalt chips off pretty easy. You can then cut new saw kerfs 1 brick higher and cover all the old remaining residue with the new flashing.Matching the caulk to the mortar color could be tough. Much easier and neater looking to match the color to the sheet metal.Use the best freaking caulk your money can buy,the cost is miniscule compared to the expense bad caulk can cause.
*just like steve says, chip off what you can and go higher with the flashing. if you have to clean the brick, check a masonry supply. they have some graffiti remover that might work. use urethane caulk. from a masonry supply they should have a couple of greys. watch out, urethane is not very forgiving. it'll stick to anything a long time and take movement. don't open a tube tonight and finish tomorrow. best of luck to ya.
