Lots of A frame homes here have shingles all the way to the ground.
Also see lots of commercial buildings with asphalt shingles on a barn roof type application. MOST of the side wall is roofing shingles. Even looks pretty good.

Remember the nailing pattern changes from four to at least six. In the heat, the composition shingle will sag unless well supported to the wall.
I would have concerns about some of the newer shingles like the fibreglass ones because they tend to be thinner and more floppy than the old. The architectural grade would do well.
You know, Iwas considering doing the same thing. I did an EPDM flat roof job that had 30 inch high parapet side walls. The building's exterior, including the side walls, are vinyl, but the interior of the side walls are highly visible on this structure. I ran the EPDM up the sidewalls, but it looks rather blah, though it does keep the rain out; which before had been a big problem.
I think shingling the sidewalls would look good, but hate to put nails into the EPDM.
I've been told the EPDM will "grab" the nails and seal them off, but I hate to take the chance. Anyone else try this?
Anybody remember the old insul-brick sided houses? Nothing but a shingle made to resemble brick. How long ago did that product go out of business? I still see homes like that, but they are very old homes.

About 20 years ago, I had 3-tab shingles installed on the sidewalls of a 700 sq. ft. cabin, also had the privacy fence shingled. And still, to this day they look GREAT. The shingle color is green, location is northern Arizona. Remind me to tell you about the first crew of roofer's who showed up.
This is a reminder to tell us!
The Cabin, picture a stop sign cut in half, tuck the 1/2 octagon into the side of a hill , with the cut side facing South, a passive solar affair. The north wall is the shortest at 3' tall exterior side, then following grade , the tallest is 7',at the exterior south side. The walls are poured concrete, exposed aggragete is the inside finished wall, and the exterior is 1 1/2" furring strips with 1/2" cdx, as sheathing, styrofoam in between furring. O.K. , moving on now, or back in time, the Roofers show up to start shingling, and they walk around this Cabin a couple of times, kicking at the pine needles, the lead man says he needs to talk to his Boss , and off they go. A few phone calls later, and a few days later the Boss man arrives, ( A friend of mine), he doesn't even hesitate, felt's it, snaps his bond lines , and does it.If I remember right , I asked Doug, the roofer , "What happened with the roofer's?" and he says to me ,"Well, if it was a 12/ 12 pitch 2 stories in the air with a couples of dormer's, not a problem for them, but a flat verticle wall , well they had never done one of them before." Today , I can only guess that they were not quite certain on how to flash to the pine needles. A story by Jim A. Jensen Prescott Arizona
