howdy,
i’d like to replace the gate on the side of my house with a wider gate that spans the full 5′ from the side of the garage to the fence. right now there’s a narrow (about 1′) piece of fence, and an old gate. what i’m curious about is whether the gate needs to be attached (hinge-side) to one of the fence posts as it is right now, or if it can be attached to the house side? i can hit a 2×4 on the house side (siding is stucco), but is it bad/wrong/incorrect to attach the gate hinges to the house?
thanks!

Might look a little cheesey.
Aesthetically, a post would work nicer.
You also might want to consider doing the 5' span with a double gate.....post on each side. 5' is highly likely to sag.

Nothing wrong with attaching to the house. You don't want the hinges right against the house, of course, if for no other reason that you need clearance so the gate can fully open. But you can attach a post or jamb to the house and then the hinges to that.
Attachment depends on the circumstances. Probably you should drill holes for lags, and lag the post/jamb to the wall with spacers to hold it off a half-inch or so.
happy?
