We have a house with a walkout basement and want to put in a deck off the main floor (i.e. 1 story up). The exterior walls are clad in brick. When attaching the legder board to the house do I have to go right through the brick and the framing to bolt it on or can I just use lag bolts and go into the brick?
Any advice is appreciated.

Bricks have no flexibility to them, so when there is movement on the deck it will crack the mortar & pull the bricks out.
You need to anchor to a structural support, so yes drill through the bricks & anchor to the framing inside.
I'd use another set of posts and beam near the house to avoid penetrating th e brick veneer

Yeah, but that means he'd have to build a free-standing structure not attached to the house at all. Lotta extra framing to keep it from racking/swaying, seems to me.
Or are you talking about my Velcro¯ idea again...?
