I am about to build a pergola attached to a brick house and would like to have some advice about using 2×12 cedar as ledgers. How should I place the sleeve bolts and how many do you suggest to mount the 20ft ledger onto the brick. The ledger will support 20ft cedar joists at 16″ centers? The joists will rest on 14″ prefab columns spanned with 2×12 cedar.

Solid brick or brick veneer?
OK, so what you have is known as "brick veneer" -- a single thickness of brick covering a conventional frame (stud wall) structure.
The problem is that you have to anchor to the studs behind the brick, without displacing the brick in the in/out direction. There is an on-going thread on this exact same topic -- I'll look up the link.
Thanks Dan, I had no idea as you can tell that I need to hit the studs. I will follow up on the thread asap.
Just read the thread and now have to clarify with you. Do I understand this correctly that I need to drill through the brick then insert a sleeve and then lag screw into the studs?? Is there a correct way (easy way to determine the location of the studs? Does this mean I need to use about a 6-7" lag screw to reach well into the studs?
Yes, whatever works, and yes, respectively.
