Attaching ceiling joists to top plate?
Let’s say for the sake of clarity I’m attaching16′ long, 2X12 ceiling joist to my top plate. My wall studs are on 16″ centers and my ceiling joists are on 16″ centers; directly over the wall studs….
What is the best way to attach the rim joists and ceiling joists to the top plate?
Thanks,
Bill

Start off with toenails and continue framing. Then come back and use simpson 2.5's.
Depending on your area you might have to sheet over the rim to attach everything together. Check with your BI if you have one on that.
I agree!

What are they?

Since this is a gambrel roof, on the ends, would you start your second story 8' tall sheathing over the joists?
Thanks, Bill
Why do you need simpson hangers for ceiling jousts and rim joist connection?Joe Carola
They aren't hangers. They are the hurricane straps.
We have to use them in this case he talks about. We get alot of hurricanes in Michigan so I can see the theory behind them. :)
The rim joists gets toenailed to the top plate and the ceiling joists/floor joist butts up against the rim joists and toenailed to the top plate. The the rim joists gets facenailed to the ceiling joist.
