As a small builder in N.C. for a number of years, I have run across this problem on more than one occasion. What is the best way to attach the band(rim joist, ledger) through brick veneer? Yes, I know, through bolt it. That not only works well, but the Building Inspector’s really like it. But what if you have a finished living area, on the basement level, on the opposite side of the wall from the deck? Tearing out a large portion of the ceiling to access the cavity between the joists isn’t always an option. Supporting the band on the outside with a 4×4 against the wall and bearing on the footing is acceptable, but it too has to be bolted and is quite unsightly. Local inspectors say lags are suitable, but some proof that they penetrate the house floor framing is needed. The July 2004 issue on deck framing got my attention, but the brick veneer concern wasn’t mentioned. Any help or ideas?

DO NOT BOLT IT..there is air space behind the brick (supposedly) and when a crank up the nuts the brick will fracture.
tapcons and PL adhesive, or another anchor type thing..no thru bolts.

Unless you use large metal backer plates.
If you do nothing, nothing will happen.
