I am planning to replace a horror of a mantle with one made of an old yellow pine barn timber that will finish out at about 2.5 inches X ll inches x 11 feet. One end will be supported by integral bookshelves, also yellow pine, and presents no problem. But two thirds of the length will be supported only by brackets (also 2.5 inch yellow pine) attacked to 50-year-old masonry wall in which neither bricks nor mortar inspire confidence. How can I do this without guaranteeing that sometime in the middle of the night three generations of wedding/baby/anniversary pictures don’t come crashing down?
