Attic and whole house ventilation
I’ve got a client who wants to put an attic fan in to ventilate both the attic and to cool the whole house in the summertime. Any ideas? I’m kind of stuck on the problem of providing adequate ventilation in the attic to clear heat and moisture year round and to allow for pulling air through a cieling register in the summer to cool the house. Can this be done without having to close the air intake to the attic space so the fan or fans pull off the house register? Could I install 2 gable fans, one for year round use and one for summer cooling?

I'm interested to see the responses to your questions. I'm installing central AC in my home and thinking about removing a large house fan from the attic. We had problems with it sucking fumes into the first/second levels of the house from the basement boiler and odors from the fireplace/chimney flue were dispersed throughout the house. I replaced the boiler (maybe that was part of the problem), but never used the fan again. Now I have been thinking about attic cooling needs.
