I know I’ll get ripped for this but which way do you install an attic fan? In to bring air into the attic or outward to blow the hot air out of the attic.

Blow the hot air out.
Theoretically, the fan draws cooler air through the soffit vents and exhausts through the roof; cooling the attic air space and underside of the roof deck.
Don't ask how I know that........

What kind of attic fan are you talking about -- A "whole house" fan that draws air into the attic from the house, a rooftop exhaust fan, or a gable fan?
The way I have my attic set up, I have a gable end window that has screening instead of glazing (off the prevailing wind direction so blown-in rain isn't a problem) and a 1200 cfm NuTone gable end attic fan like this one - http://www.nutonesales.com/attic.html blowing out at a similar situation at the other end. This combination 'flow-thru' design, works really well at keeping the attic cool.
