Attic Insulation around can lights
My friend has can lights in her ceiling. She had new additional insulation installed in the attic and became confused about whether or not the can lights should have special covers over them. I know from past reading that that is an issue, but cannot find the details of what she might need to do. The insulation installer did not put covers on the cans ( a previous bid said they needed to do it, but she got confused and went with someone who did not worry about it). Recommendations?

The cans should be labeled "IC" if insulation is in contact with them. If not they should be swapped out for IC models if they are in an insulated area.

Come on guys. If you're Festing, it's time to pay up. Half of you have already wasted that much on beer and #### this week already.
Right ... they should be labeled IC rated. Two options: 1) change the fixture or 2) put a sealed box around the fixture. The contractor was wrong to say it wasn't an issue. He should correct it ... have it inspected to make sure it will be safe. The insulation contractor who brought up the issue sounds like he may have looked into it and decided it was necessary ... no incentive to do otherwise if the bids are competitive. The other guy just wanted to get the bid and get paid ... he should correct the defficiency ... don't pay him. I hope he was licensed and bonded. This is a problem that may not show up for years and it could be defastating. She shouldn't accept the job.
er devastating ... can't spell
