We have a new house in California. The South and West walls of the house have no shade. The house was put in what was a pasture which had NO trees and there will be no shade trees for a number of years.
I can not find a calculation that would give the width (or how far the canvas should extend from the house at 90 degrees)of a canvas awing to put high up along the South and West to shade the exterior walls from the Sun. Does any one have a source or site to do the calculation or any suggestion or considerations. We are at about North latitude 38 degrees.
The West wall we want to shade is 23 feet long and 10 feet tall including windows and doors.

This will give you some information. Draw a vertical picture of your wall with the top and bottoms of the windows, mark the angle of the sun and measure out from the wall for your awning. You can extrapolate for other dates.
*Here is some graphic information. Although for 36 rather than 38 degrees it should be of some help.
