A buddy’s girlfriends house was just damaged by fire…..haven’t seen it, but she lost everything in the fire apparently. Quoting from his email, “ Now the insurance adjuster is <!—-><!—-> <!—->
saying that they can gut and clean the house… and apply a sealer, (B.I.N.) <!—-><!—->
http://www.zinsser.com/product_detail.asp?ProductID=10 to the ruff exterior walls and attic to hide any smell of smoke damage.”
I’ve used Zinnsser stuff in other applications, but not this one…..any first hand experience in how well it works? Thanks.

Kilz primer sealer is another good product for this app. Where an appropriate mask, think I killed a few brain cells using a spraygun in attic!
I use this product all the time - it's a white pigmented, shellac-based primer that is unbeatable, in my book. It can be tinted with universal colors & dries in an hour. It has an egshell finish, & I often leave it as the top coat in baths & kitchens,
My house is 300 years old, & has a lot of mold & yucky stuff to cover.
I have not personally used it on other than minor smoke damage - I've been lucky, so far - but I know it is recommended for that.
My sympathy to your girlfriend - if she is OK, try to remember that everything else is just 'stuff'...
it works . there are some chemical additives you can add to the bin's thats called unsmoke i think. you can call these people and tell them the details and they can recommend you a product that will probally help.

heres another good company and product.
I had good friends who owned a Servicemaster franchise. A part of their business was disaster recovery. They and other subs who worked with them used it to seal in the smoke odor.

There was a recent discussion about this. Are they hiring someone to do it or DIY?
We do restoration work and shellac based sealers are preferred over oil or latex sealers but to completely cover the odor, BINing is only a small piece of the puzzle. Our company offers a no smell guarantee which we would not do if BIN were the total solution.
A good restoration company have the equipment and and newest materials to restore your friends home

Thank you for the responses, folks. Will pass this on to my buddy and his friend, and we'll see what happens. Will let you know if anything interesting develops.Cabinetmaker/college woodworking instructor. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
