Does anyone have a copy of Fine Homebuilding vol. 180 pp.98 that they could scan or take a photo of and e-mail to me? There is a figure on that page showing a connection of a rafter to a ceiling/floor joist where the two do not touch each other. I have not been able to search this site and find the figure. I only get the text part. thanks.

I just read that article and am betting that he is wrong about the hurricane clips. ( I also just don't trust a 2x 4 not to split along the grain over time.)
Installed flat on the floor and nailed both to floor and rafter, they would work in the in the same load direction as they do when installed verticly, and should provide the amount of resisitance. If the hurricane clip doesn't provide enough load resistance then Simpson and others make ties that will.
Installing them this way would not mean that you don't also need them in the normal orientation.
