I am looking for suggestions on the best method to attach the end of a balcony handrail end to a wall. The rail terminates with a rosette which, in combination with the drywall, seems to make too much material to penetrate to make an ordinary rail bolt effective.

a "Rail Bolt" is really just a hanger bolt.
a good hardware store will have one that is the proper length for the job at hand.
Once you find them? buy a few.
I always made sure there were a few in my truck.
Also, drill THRU the rosette.
Thanks. I have not yet found what I need in HD, (should know better) and so I'll try my trusty (but more distant) hardware store.
Another method..........one I prefer less..........is to fasten the Rosette to the blacking in the wall with screws, then plug those holes and drill to attach the railbolt to the rosette and whatever penetration beyond the drywall is just a bonus.
I have a quaint older method that uses no railboltsuse glue between rosette and end of rail. pin it on with a couple out of the trim gun. Then drill and seat dowels thru the rosette into the rail. Then set teh rosette to the wall with glue there as well, and drill and screw the rosette on and bung those over. The only railbolt is at the other end of the rail if needed there. I have also used structural lag through the newel from the opposite side and bunged it over.
