b HELP!! I have a hosue that is 75 years old. I would like to install French doors going out onto my deck. There is a door already in place that I would remove. However, the wall is framed out using balloon construction with the joists for the second floor running parallel with the wall that I want to put the new door in. How do I remove the old door, cut out some of the 2×4 to put in a new header without the back of the house falling in? I should also note that I just retiled the shower right about this room and would like not to crack the tile. Can someone offer me some advice?

Thanks Fred. Could I do this by attaching joist hangers or "L" brackets?

Joseph,
I have discussed this issue with an engineer at work. It was suggested that I nail a 2x10 across the front of most of the studs on the wall. Then I can cut out the 2x4's that I need to. Put in the appropriate header and frame out accordingly. And remove the 2x10 from the front.

Hi Robert,
If you're comfortable doing this project, I would suggest a few items.
I gather from your engineer friend's advice, you must have a 9 foot ceiling in the house at the very least. So assuming that you can install a 2 x 12 against the inside of your studs, at the top, against your ceiling joist, do use screws to ensure increased shear strength.
Don't skimp on the lenght of your 2 x 12, the more studs you attach to the better.
Do install a support for your ceiling at a right angle to your wall and use 4 x 4's at the very least for the height required. Make sure they relieve the pressure of the load on the outside studs.
Once you have done all this, then cut out the studs as required, install your jacks and frame in the header. Make absolutely sure that the installation you do is snug and tight to the studs you have cut. When you release the load, the last thing you want is for the load to sag or relax lower than when you started this little project.
Once clear and all your braces, post and temporary headers are removed, install the doors as per manufacturers instructions, and life goes on safely.
Good luck

Hey Fred and Gabe,
Thanks for all of your advice and help. Fred your drawing clears up a lot of my questions. It is easier to visualize it. What size srews do you suggets? And should I screw them to the joists?
Again, thank you both for clearing up alot of questions. This is my first remodel of a balloon construction. So I was a little nervous.
*Fred,In reading my last email I noticed I typed some thing wrong. I meant to ask should I screw the lag screws to the studs or just the joists or both?
