I posted a question a while ago in the general section and
got some good responses. Now though I have an
insulation/ventilation question. To recap…….the shop
will be on the second floor (pros outway the cons). The
lower floor is post and beam on a concrete slab, the upper
is framed with trusses… typical gambrel roof with a 24/12
pitch to 8′ height and 6/12 pitch to the peak. The trusses
are on 4′ centers strapped with 2X4s about every 2′ and
metal roofing on that. Floor of the second floor is
2X10s on 24″ centers with 4/4 T&G flooring. I’m in rural
Ontario and temperatures can range from(farenheit) 40 below
in the winter up to close to 100 above in the summer. The
lower floor and gable ends are board and batten siding.
1) Right now the soffits, which are at floor level, are open
and covered with screen for the full length but there is no
ridge vent, or gable venting (other than a couple of small
windows about 4′ off the floor)which means it gets pretty
hot. I’ve been reading the hot roof vs. cold roof
discussions and wonder what you kind folks would suggest as
far as ventilating, insulating and finishing the ceiling.
2) The end gables are board and batten and lots of gaps and
knots. I like the outside esthetic of it and don’t really
want to change it unless necessary, so what would the best
way to make the gables weather tight before insulating.
I’ll ultimately be putting a large door in one end and
windows in the other to increase light.
Thanks,
