On page 63 of the November 2005 issue of FHB, Gary Katz wrote an article on Baseboard Done Better. As I will later this month install baseboard in our hallway, I am curious to know what the purpose of the blue tape on the floor fullfills? I went through the article seveal times but did not find any reference to it.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Stan,
I'm not sure if the reason was mentioned in the article...sometimes little things are edited out of articles. In this case, the issue didn't relate to installing baseboard, so I can understand why. I suggested we put blue tape down on the hardwood floors before installing the base as a favor to the painters...so they wouldn't have to mask the floors right up to the baseboard. When the painters finished, they ran a utility knife at an angle along the bottom of the base and tore the tape up.

Gary, when I set base/shoe to be painted later I'll put down painters paper (one adhesived edge), set the trim on that and the end result the same. A variation on the theme.
And a public thanks for donating to the auction. We done good.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Do you put the adhesive under the base, or the loose edge?

I've done it both ways and I don't know which works better. Doesn't take much to pull the paper out if the paint doesn't get slopped on it too much, otherwise a quick slit with the blade and you can remove it. I think maybe with the adhesive under the trim, it doesn't bunch up very easily during assembly.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Thanks Gary.
I am planning on cutting the base, paint it in the garage, install it and then touch the nail holes up.
