I recently installed hardwood floors in my house, where there had been carpet previously. No problems there. The challenge is now in matching the trim of the new hardwood floors with that of the existing linolem floors, as there is a height difference of .75″. I have used a standard 3 and seven-eights baseboard, with quarter round as a shoe moulding. It seems like the easiest thing is to cut some filler strips to raise the trim up to the height of the new wood flooring. Any other suggestions?
Thanks – Foz.

I had a similar problem trimming around a staircase. Base trim was taller than the first riser, so I had to get the base down to scoot under the first tread. What I ended up coming up with was to mitre the base on the flat, with a transition piece of base between the two "levels" of the base trim. The top of the transition piece was at the same angle as the staircase itself, so it kind of flows right under the tread.
I'll post a picture of it as soon as the camera batteries recharge. Pic is buried on the camera card and when I went to look for it, found the batteries were dead.

Are you matching existing bsbd or replacing all. If the later you could get a taller bsbd and rip it down where needed.-----------------------------------------------------------

Ted: It's not me doing it. It's Foz.
But thanks for the idea ;-)

Found the picture. I did the floor and the base trim. Staircase was existing. As I said, I mitred the base on the flat and transitioned it under the first tread. Depending on how your rooms are laid out, similar base treatment might work for you (obviously your transition piece would be a lot shorter -- I made this one as long as it is to match the slope of the staircase).
On the one hand, the way I did it, the top of your base obviously wouldn't match between the two areas. On the other hand, if you make the top of the base even, it might look a little weird at the bottom as the base would look "taller" in one area. Tough call.

All good stuff. thanks for the pic and the ideas. I think I will angle the quarter round down for the height difference, and also raise the basebd up, using the quarter round to cover the gap. Later guys. Foz
