Help! I’m re-doing my cellar and I need help in 2 areas. First, I want to cut a hole in the 8″ poured wall for an egress window. What’s the easiest way to cut the concrete? I heard there is a saw that works much like a chainsaw. Is there? Can I rent it?
Second, Part of this project includes building a bar. (I’ll need it after cutting the concrete!) how high should a bar be and does anyone know where I can get design ideas? Thanks.

Yes there is such a saw and yes you can rent them if you are into hard work. We call them " Quickcuts ".
Better to call a Concete cutting contractor and let them do it.
Now to the most important question.
Bar height can be critical and this depends on how much you drink. I f you are a heavy drinker you may want to consider putting the bar at chin height so when you a too sloshed you can just rest your chin on the top.If a social drinker than it needs to be elbow height to give you something to lean on whilst engaging in conversation with the many friends you suddenly find you have.

Ah, sounds like good advise. Was that experience speaking?
*In my area the saw rents for around $200-250 plus blade wear and comes with alot of hard work. The concrete cutter pros will do it for $375 and you will have a puddle to clean up afterwards. Life is short.

Hi there,
Here the saw rents for $35.00 plus blades and a contractor will do it for $250.00 and cleans up after himself. (and that is Canadian funds)

P.S. regarding the bar height, nothing to add to Mark's specifications, they feel just about right.
*Bar height is around 42". This allows a 30" high counter behind and under the bar or a 36" high counter behind with a 6" step. If you install a good bar rail this will allow 2 levels of socialization. The hard core can lean on the rail and socialize at floor level. Others can rest their feet on the rail and lean on the bar.
*Have you considered some type of padding around bar area, you know, some kind of "fall protection"? - yb
*Just remember folks ...you can't fall off the floor. a couple of pillows , a warm friendly female companion, and the libation of your choice.Who needs a bar?
*Jim and Port have it about right.Remember kids, have fun, but lets not have anybody get hurt.Safety first.JonC
*Thats easy ! You just come up with another excuse to visit your local pub. Don't forget your tape measure.
*Mike, missed you in Nice, I just got back monday. Hope you enjoyed...As far as bar height, I'll agree with the 42". Supports the elbows nicely whether standing or stooling. I used an old Architectural Graphic Standards book (Ramsey & Sleeper, 1953) as a guide when doing my own. 42" is fairly standard, with the 30" stool and the foot rail approx 8" off the floor and 8" away from the bar.
