Hey all,
I’m new here but I’ve been over at FWW for a while. I’m getting ready for my next remodel project and that is finishing off a basement room.
One thing I need to do is replace the old windows. The foundation is concrete block. The windows are set in a frame that has mortar sloped up to it on the inside and at some point, storm windows were put on the outside.
My initial thought was to just tear everything out and put in a new frame and HD bought vinyl windows. I’m worried about a few things.
1. The immediately above the window frame are the joists. I’m sure if I tear everything out that they will stay attached to the rim joist but it makes me a little nervous.
2. I don’t want to make a bigger project than I have to but the windows are pretty bad and I want the room to look nice. Is it just as simple as making a frame/jamb that fills the width of the block and comes out flush to the interior finished wall and then put the window in?
3. Can I just glue in the frame?
4. How about water proofing the outside?
Sorry about all the questions. I’ve done plenty of above grade windows so I don’t know why these basement ones are throwing me for a loop. I guess its just that it seems so messy. Any advice is much appreciated.

the basement windows aren't likely structural so you should be able to remove them w/o worry about the joists.
I like to remove the whole window, frame and all. Just cut out any nails, saw the frame in half. If you can't get a clean concrete edge on the outside just patch and reparge to get a good slope on the sill. Caulk the interface between window and concrete. Jamb extentions on the inside. The new windows will have directions on where they should be nailed, tapcons are fine for this ..
I replaced a couple of windows in my concrete foundation. I used units with fiberglass frames. I was concerned with deterioration of the frames that's why I chose fiberglass. Never installed fiberglass windows. Was really impressed with them. painted the outside a different color than the inside. No problems taking paint. I noticed now some models have wood veneer on the inside so you can stain them. Just an other option.
I've made PT frames to set new windows in, and just set vinyl windows in the foundation opening. Both work, but the second is easier.
I use a closed cell expanding foam to glue the windows in. Its really sticky, so it holds the windows in place, eliminates any possible drafts, and since its closed cell, won't be affectd by moisture.
I do push them out to meet the old cement from the old windows. And add any jamb extension necessary.
