I am about to have a large cast iron “drop-in” type bathtub installed. I thought I had read somewhere in FHB that some type of a sand or grout pad was used beneath the tub. My contractor wants to use steel shims to hold the tub up off its legs. This seems to me like it might not be very stable. What is the best way to install such a tub? It weighs about 450 lbs.

I use a mortar mix under non-steel tubs... just set it down... make sure it's level and secure. But ask your plumber why he wants to do what he does... he may have a very good reason for it!!!
