My brother has sent me on a mission to find white finished beadboard that will work in a bathroom. He found beadboard in a bigbox store but there was a label on it indicating it was not recommended for high moisture areas. I assume it will swell up and buckle. Any ideas?

best in a bath is a composite ... like azek.
but ... I've never had any problems with properly painted plybead.
even painted ... but "finish grade" ... birch or oak.
the finish grade paints better ... and doesn't have the "football" surface repairs the print grade stuff has. Those always show thru the finish.
or ... regular beadboard "slats" ... as long as it's painted and sealed ...
and not installed in the tub /shower ... you'll be fine.
someone will be along soon to tell you I am completely wrong and it's all gonna fall off the walls as soon as U run the sink and the house is gonna burn to the ground.

edit to add ... no MDF and no poplar

thanks. it looks like the beadboard comes in 1/2" t x 5 1/2" boards. Was kind of hoping for 4'x8' sheets...
The big boxes usually have bead board in sheets too. The grooves aren't very deep though. The slats look better.
I've had the mdf beadboard in my kid's bath for 7 years. No problems yet.

how did you install/attach it?
Paneling glue and nails , nothing fancy. I painted it after installation. Not sure if that's the best method, but it worked for me.
Are your kids old enough to take really long teenage showers. That make a lot of steam?
I used painted GP plybead in a tub surround - no shower - no problems.
No showers yet, just baths so far. My oldest is only 7.
what type paint would you use to seal the wood from moisture
kitchens and baths ...
PermaWhite.
and it can be tinted to different colors.
finish with PermaWhite ... U can't go wrong

Make that "expensive fancy plastic". Actually we use a lot of Azeck for exterior trim, and it is a fine product, much more than just fancy plastic. That's what you get with the cheaper stuff, and it is brittle and hard to work.
I think the expense of Azec for a bathroom is overkill. I would us the sheets of beaded plywood. No mdf or masonite stuff. I like the sheets because even though the beads are not quite as deep, you don't have the paint problems with the expansion and contraction at every seam, like with individual boards

Cellular PVC. Water does not hurt it.
