I’m finishing a kitchen re-do. Last step is the island – we originally planned to put finished cherry plywood on the back of the island (the island is 9′ long at normal (36″) counter height, and the back side has a ‘bar’ at 42″). DW decided at the last minute that she wanted beadboard on the back instead, which I am picking up today (1/2″ x 3″ cherry). My question is on the trim detail along the (hardwood) floor.
The rest of the house has white colonial base. I don’t see any reason to match that. The builder suggests a cherry 1×4 with a rabbet – specifically, he wants to take 5/4 cherry, rabbet a 1/2″ x 1/2″ groove in the back, and slide the 1/2″ beadboard into the rabbet. He would do the same along the top, although I’m less concerned about the top because it is under the bar and will never be seen.
His approach sounds ok, but I’m wondering if there is a different / better / ‘standard’ method for this detail. We work well together and he is open to any ideas I come up with.
Thanks!

I think this technique would work very well.
If I were doing it myself, I would keep the 1 X 4 at the top, but use a somewhat wider board as the base -- a 1 X 6 would be about right.
It sounds like a waste of 5/4 cherry. What you will end up with is the appearance of a 1/2 inch thick baseboard
I would buy 4/4 S4S and route the top to match the profile of your existing base. Maintain the continuity.
Bill,
Personally, I don`t care for the look of beadboard tucking behind the base moulding. All the little voids (at beads) just don`t look appropriate to me. Not saying its right or wrong....just a personal opinion.
What I like to do is run the beadboard to a flat surface. I build out behind where the base moulding will be going about an 1/8 inch heavier than the thickness of the beadboard. On top of this firring, I run a peice of flat stock horizontally of the same thickness. I usually put a slight bevel on the top, front edge. This peice is set so that it will sit a heavy 1/8" to 3/16" higher than the base cap. I run my beadboard atop this.....nice and tight.....and then apply my baseboard and capping atop the firring strips.
If you go this route, be sure to acclimate all materials properly, and apply at least the primer or sealer coat prior to installation.
Where I leave the play is at the capping......here I tuck behind the mouldings, as it is typically below eye level.
I`ve attatched two pics......hope they help clarify.

Thanks Jaybird - It took me a little while to 'get it', but I understand what you did - thanks for the 3rd picture, btw. It looks great. I guess I need my wife to decide if she wants that colonial edge or not to match the rest of the house. Otherwise, I could just run a 4/4 x4 (or 6) along the base, maybe champher the edge as you've suggested, then run the beadboard down to it. The beadboard is 1/2 thick. I was going to stain it (yuck - her choice - personally would never do this to cherry!), then apply a flat poly prior to installation, then maybe a satin or semi gloss afterwards to get the sheen to match the cabinets.
I guess I need my wife to decide if she wants....
Of course.....the boss always gets the final say in the matter.
