I am considering building a home with 2 bedrooms in a basement which will also contain rooms for rough storage and a workshop. A hallway will separate the finished from the unfinished areas. My wife is concerned about dust, etc. infiltrating the finished areas. Are there construction techniques that will eliminate this problem? If so, can you comment on the additional expense?
Thanks

Forced air heating? Forget keeping the dust out.
Hot water? Much easier: Full finished walls & ceilings, weather stripping on the door, outside venting. Even that doesn't keep you from tracking dust in on your shoes tho'.

Here's a bit of a story. This shop is right next to a bedroom. I would lose my manhood if a speck of dust were to migrate elsewhere.

I put a shop next to a bedroom in our last house. I built a second wall on the shop side with doubled up fiberglass insulation between for noise mostly. I do some of my best work at night at didn't want to have to worry about noise.
As far as dust is concerned, I'd invest in a good dust collection system. The best way to handle dust is to collect it as close to the source as possible. So right at the tool and in the room itself.
Also, I've heard that in a basement room the dust levels can get very high and damge your health. The dust particles and filters are measured in microns.
You might want to go over to the Knots forum and ask or do a search.
Maybe you could pressurize the hallway and that would keep the dust down some? (Or would low pressure in hallway be better? Exhaust fan at end of hall, for example.) Maybe better would be shop and bedrooms back to back with very tight seal between and access to shop way at one end of a hall and access to bedrooms at opposite end of hall (or two separate halls at two ends of basement with no connection between--one accesses bedrooms and other hallway with outside entrance for shop). Use dust collection in shop. Maybe slightly pressurize bedrooms. Can you tell I'm just throwing out ideas!?
